Black Diamonds Shine at Worcester
Whilst the top price was achieved by a ram, the recent Worcester Sale was dominated by the girls, in direct contrast to the same sale last year. A lot of males failed to find new homes this year, and although the average shearling ram price was up on last year by approximately £60, ram lamb averages fell by nearly 50%
Top price of 1350gns went to the Male and Overall Reserve Champion, Lot 241 Cernyw Ecstra. A shearling ram produced by G & L Owen, he was bought over the phone by J Millar, Lockerbie, Scotland. Next top in this section was Lot 246 Greyland Ebernoe, standing second in the show and Reserve Male Champion, coming all the way with breeders C & C Clark from Farnham, selling for 740gns to Sollis, Ceredigion, followed by the 5th placed Lot 234 Speccott Eindhoven, 720gns, coming up from Devon and promptly returning to Devon with A Lopes.
Ram Lambs were headed by Lot 265, Olwen Hughes-Owen’s Cynefin Ffowc, 1st placed ram lamb and selling for 400gns to B Mills, Somerset. 370gns bought Lot 277, Hayberries Foxrock, from P & S Addison and selling to C & F Swinnerton, Shropshire.
Females enjoyed a stronger trade with aged ewes topping at 140gns for Lot 279 Barmoll Diva and joining MJC Hocken, Gloucestershire, and shearling ewes peaking at 700gns for the 1st placed shearling, Lot 313 Wallridge Moor Ester. She made the journey down from Northumberland with breeder Caroline Anderson and was bought by C Pickford, Cheshire. Hot on her heels was Lot 300, another Hayberries consignment, standing 3rd in the show and going away with B Wenmouth, Cornwall. 4th place shearling Lot 304, Wolfclyde Elsie, achieved 430gns for breeder Anne Robinson and joined Speccott Eindhoven with A Lopes.
Overall Show Champion Lot 321, Rockford Fallon, achieved 1050gns, second highest price of the day for breeder J Kestell, heading the ewe lambs and leaving with D Jones, Llandrindod Wells. 720gns secured Lot 336, Tasley Fancy, from the flock of Miss S Bower, and joining AM Yardley, Stafford. 3rd highest price, 420gns was paid for another Rockford ewe lamb, Lot 320, Rockford Frizzle, and away with R Heigh, Lancaster whilst Lot 330, Conic Flavia, made the long journey down from Scotland for breeder Brian Gibson worthwhile, making 400gns, and standing second in the show classes to the female champion, and continuing down south with TW Helyer, Wiltshire.
